Graphic Design

Graphic design is the method of creating visible content that allows to speak messages with an target market. The artwork of visual communication is criticalspecifically for manufacturers looking to connect to their audience, and graphic layout is an appropriate solution.

Principles of graphic design

All graphic design, regardless of type, is based on five key elements:

  • Contrast to generate impact and highlight important areas
  • Alignment to create a sharper, clearer outcome
  • Balance for stability and structure
  • Hierarchy to create organization and direction
  • Proximity that refers to the spatial relationship between the elements of the design
  • White Space also known as “negative space,” is empty space around the content and functional elements of a page
  • Repetition to unify and strengthen
  • Simplicity the discipline of minimizing, refining or editing back a design
  • Function is the practical, getting-down-to-business part of the process of design and desktop publishing

Graphic design is all about the “WOW” factor, but good design is nothing without the “ohhhhh” of understanding as the eye and brain connect style and purpose.

9 types of graphic design

You should have a pretty good understanding of graphic design and where it comes from. Now let's talk a little about the types of graphic design that you know today. Some of them, you may not have even realized, are graphic design.

Let's dive in.

1: Brand Identity Design

The first type of graphic design is brand identity design. This is the most important type you should know as a business professional.

While your company will likely use a number of these different types, no company can succeed without a brand identity.

A brand identity consists of:

  • Logo
  • Color palette
  • Fonts/typography
  • Imagery style
  • Patterns/shapes
  • Brand guidelines

You can see an example of brand guidelines holding all of these brand identity elements below.

Graphic designers tend to specialize in just a couple of different types of design. Brand identity designers have to be well-versed in graphic design trends, what types of designs resonate with customers and more.

#2: Marketing & Advertising Design

Marketing design is graphic design for marketing initiatives. Marketing designers can work on small projects, such as the layout of a promotional email, or on large, multifaceted projects, such as designing a booth, flyers, and print materials for trade shows.

Marketing designers may work on visual design for:

  • emails
  • newsletters
  • billboards and other signage
  • posters
  • print ads
  • trade show booths
  • physical mailers
  • website assets
Marketing design and brand design share some commonalities, but where brand designers seek to establish the overall direction and message for a brand, marketing designers typically focus on communicating a specific message for one campaign or even one type of asset or platform. Let's look at some examples.
There is an abundance of marketing materials that can be created to promote a brand and many designers specialize in this type of graphic design.

#3: User Interface Design

User interface (UI) design focuses more on designing actual websites, applications, software, and other online programs.

This specialization requires a designer to understand how to design a program that is visually appealing while ensuring that the user can easily navigate and understand how to use it.

Our UI team has worked hard to create an easy-to-use interface for the Visme design tool so that both new and experienced users can get the most out of their experience.

Web designers may work on projects including:

  • Creating icons and buttons
  • Creating images, illustrations, and other graphics
  • Designing web page layouts
  • Creating various interactive design elements on a website
  • Creating videos and gifs
  • Helping ensure visual elements are optimized for all devices (desktop, mobile, etc.)
  • Working with web development, UX, UI, and marketing design teams to improve overall experience for site visitors

Of course, plenty of graphic designers are also web designers and have created beautiful websites and mobile apps without the support of a large team. And thanks to no-code platforms like Webflow, designers can create stunning interactive websites without needing extensive knowledge of coding.

 #4: Product Design

Product design involves creating the overall design of the products and how they are presented to the audience. This can be anything from t-shirt and bottle prints to the actual design of a watering can or coffee mug.
Take these products from Frank Body for example. The shapes of the bottles are designed to suit each type of skin care, but the designer also had to create the designs that are on each of the bottles or packaging.

Product designers need to make sure that the products they create work well for the end user. Sometimes this means reinventing the wheel on products people already use and love, while other times it can help design something entirely new.

#5: Publication Design

Another type of graphic design we will cover is publication design. Publication design includes the design of things like magazines, e-books, white papers, reports, books, newsletters, brochures, and more.

Publication designers must be able to create a visually appealing design that is still legible and ensures a good flow of information on each page.

In this regard, it is not all about design. The actual words and content must come first, with the design only emphasizing them.

Here is an example of an easy-to-read and well-designed publication. The cover highlights the illustration and captions of what readers will find inside, while the inner pages do a great job of visualizing the content and highlighting the main points while ensuring that the copy is the star of the show.
To test your publication design, you can customize this eBook template to share your own information with your audience in a visually appealing way.

#6: Packaging Design

From food to gadgets to designer jewelry, the packaging in which items are transported is often as important as the items themselves. Product packaging designers try to showcase or complement the items inside the packaging. Here are some examples:

#7: Typeface Design

Think of all the fonts you see every day. Check out the fonts used in this very blog post. Someone had to design all of this.

Every single font, even the most basic ones like Arial and Times New Roman, was created by a font designer.

Both fonts in this font pair below were also designed by someone who specializes in creating fonts.

Nowadays, we usually come across a typeface design that is used when brands want to create their own typeface. For example, Netflix's logo is in their branded font Netflix Sans, and Samsung has its own font Samsung One.

#8: Motion Graphic Design

Motion graphics or animation design is another type of design you often see in videos and GIFs.
For example, check out this YouTube video where we unveiled our new brand mascot.
Designing animations or motion graphics requires special tools and the ability to create something that moves.
However, if you want to start small, you can use Visme's video maker to create a moving video by customizing the template.

#9: Illustration Design

Illustrations are often part of web design, marketing and branding – but they are used in othe ways too. Some designers focus only on offering illustrations and will work with larger design teams and contribute individual assets for different projects.

Illustrators may design visual assets for:

  • children’s books
  • t-shirts and other wearables
  • cards and stationary
  • websites
  • social media
  • video and interactive media
  • marketing campaigns
Illustration styles can vary drastically from designer to designer. Some artists work almost exclusively in digital formats using tools such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop or Procreate, and others combine digital media with physical media and prefer to start with pencil and paper.
